Luis Mario Floria

Prof. Luis M. Floria

Professor of Physics, Department of Condensed Matter Physics.
Luis Mario Floría received the undergraduate degree (1977) and PhD (1983) from the University of Zaragoza, where he has held the positions of Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics and Associate Professor of Condensed Matter Physics. He has been Visiting Associate Professor in the Physics Department at the Carnegie-Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA) and the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of California (Santa Barbara, CA), scientific consultant of Los Alamos National Laboratory (Los Alamos, NM), and external collaborator of the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin at the Centre d’Études de Saclay (France).

Currently, Dr. Floría is Professor in the Condensed Matter Physics Department of the University of Zaragoza, member of the BIFI Institute and leader of the research group Statistical and Nonlinear Physics, sponsored by the regional government of Aragón (DGA).

His main fields of research have been Statistical and Quantum Field Approaches to Condensed Matter, Nonlinear Macroscopic Systems, and more recently, Complex Systems, Evolutionary Game Dynamics, and the Structure and Dynamics of Social Systems.

Jesus Gomez-Gardeñes received the degree in Physics from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, in the year 2002, and a Ph.D. in Science (Physics) from the same University in 2006 that was awarded with “Premio Extraordinario”. After a two-years postdoctoral period at the Scuola Superiore di Catania (Italy) and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain) as a “Juan de la Cierva” researcher, he joined, in October 2008, the Applied Mathematics Department of the University Rey Juan Carlos (Madrid, Spain) as an Assistant Professor where he combined teaching and research duties until the end of the year 2010. Since January 2011 he holds a position as “Ramón y Cajal” senior researcher at the University of Zaragoza. During his career Dr. Gómez-Gardeñes has supervised 4 Master Thesis and 2 Doctoral Thesis. Besides, he has been visiting researcher in different scientific institutions.

His main fields of research are statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics and the theory of complex networks. Within these disciplines he has mainly focused in the study of the emergence of collective phenomena out of onlinearity and the structure of interactions in complex systems. Along these lines he has studied some paradigmatic problems such as energy localization, synchronization, random walks, traffic congestion, disease propagation and evolutionary dynamics. He has authored more than 50 scientific papers in international refereed journals that accumulate more than 900 citations. His work was recognized by the Royal Physical Society of Spain with the prize Best Young (under 35) Researcher in Theoretical Physics. Besides, Dr. Gómez-Gardeñes is referee of several international journals (such as Physical Review Letters, Physical Review E, Europhysics Letters, New Journal of Physics among others) as well as consultant for the Spanish agency ANEP.
